Embracing the Change: What Fall Taught Me About New Beginnings

There is something quietly magical about fall in Canada.

Just a few months ago, I stepped off a plane into a summer that felt both foreign and full of promise, my first in this beautiful country after leaving behind a life I had known for decades in Sri Lanka. Back then, everything was green, warm, and buzzing with the energy of new beginnings.

Now, as October unfolds, the world around me has transformed. The trees, once lush and unassuming, have become blazing canvases of amber, crimson, and gold. The air carries a crispness that wakes you up in the best way, and the light? It is softer, gentler, like the universe is whispering, “Slow down. Breathe. You are exactly where you need to be.”

At first, I thought I would miss the constant warmth of home. But watching the leaves let go, gracefully, without resistance, has reminded me of something profound. That is change is not loss. It is part of the rhythm of life.

Just like those trees, we, too, must shed what no longer serves us to make space for what is ahead. My move to Canada was not just a change of address. It was a leap of faith, a commitment to growth, and a willingness to embrace the unknown. And now, surrounded by this breathtaking seasonal shift, I feel deeply grateful for the courage it took to say “yes” to this new chapter.

Fall doesn’t apologize for its transformation. It doesn’t cling to summer’s long days or hide its bare branches in shame. Instead, it shows up, vibrant, honest, and full of quiet strength. And maybe that is the lesson we all need right now. To welcome change not with fear, but with open arms and a heart ready to be amazed.

So if you are standing at the edge of your own season of change, whether it is a new country, a new job, a new version of yourself, I hope you, too, can find beauty in the letting go. Because sometimes, the most stunning views come after the bravest steps.

Here is to falling forward,
with gratitude in our hearts and colour in our souls. 🍁
